In this Reading Group organized by the Artists of Color Council (AoCC) at Movement Research (Core members: Megan Curet, Rebecca Gual, and Shawn Rawls; Coordinator: Jelani Taylor) participants will have the opportunity to read excerpts from the article and discuss the role of drumming, communing, and sounding as a form of resistance both in Puerto Rico and the diaspora.

In this MELT Reading Group: Body Magic – An Embodied Rebellion, participants will read one chapter from Silvia Federici’s “Caliban and the Witch,” a history of the body in the transition to capitalism rooted in the history of the persecution of the witches and the disciplining of the body; where she shows the battle against the rebel body and the conflict between body and mind.

This 5 afternoon workshop is to honor practices initiated by dancer Steve Paxton (1939-2024). We will artfully enter the basic principles of the form of Contact Improvisation which he initiated in 1972, and his Material for the Spine, begun 1994.
